Sixth Form Boarding Houses

Beale

Exterior of building

Beale is one of College’s two newest sixth form houses and is built in the garden of Sidney Lodge.  Built originally in 1984 -5, Beale has enjoyed a complete refurbishment over the past two years and is now resplendent in cerise and duck egg blue!  Its name recalls College’s most famous Principal, Dorothea Beale, whilst our sister house is Cambray in memory of the original Cambray House, where College first opened in 1854.  The two houses form a single quadrangle and are unique in that they are built into the ground, making them almost inconspicuous from the road.  Each house has accommodation for 59 girls in single rooms and has been purpose built to provide girls with university style housing.

Girls are looked after by the Housemistress, 2 full time (live-in) and 3 part time house staff as well as a team of excellent cleaning and catering staff and we pride ourselves on being a very friendly, positive and caring community with a work hard, play hard motto - our Christmas Parties are legendary.

Housemistress

My name is Miss Caroline Ralph (not to be confused with Miss Maz Ralph who is Housemistress of Sidney Lodge – one of the junior boarding houses).  I have been Housemistress of Beale since September 2004 but first came to Cheltenham as a PE teacher straight out of university in 1990.  During my first year of teaching, I was lucky enough to be a residential member of staff here in Beale and so have always had Beale as ‘my house’.  After 8 years away at Bromsgrove School as a Head of Department, I was delighted to return to Cheltenham and to Beale and together with my adopted rabbit – Prince Charming - am delighted to share my life with almost 60 lively but exciting young adults.
