The name of Cambray has been associated with College from the very beginning. The original Cambray House was a fine Georgian house with a large garden on the site of the present Cambray Court flats in the town centre. 100 years ago, the Housemistress was Miss K Bubb in the original Cambray House which was used variously (and often simultaneously) as an overflow school for girls on the College waiting list, a reduced price boarding house for poorer students, a school for ‘backward girls’ and a practice school for trainee teachers from College’s Secondary Training Department. It boasted ‘a properly built Swedish gymnasium’, a facility not commonly found in girls’ schools at that time. After 1914 it was used purely as a boarding house.
The present Cambray is one of two new senior houses erected in the grounds of Sidney Lodge in 1984-5. It accommodates 59 girls in single rooms. In certain respects resembling university halls of residence – though probably more attractive than many – these two houses, designed by Dyer Associates, offer some of the most comfortable accommodation in College. The second house is Beale, in memory of College’s most famous Principal. These houses have both been refurbished over the last five years to a standard appropriate to the 21st century, maintaining a pleasant atmosphere in which Cambray girls and staff can live and work.
As a sixth form house Cambray provides new opportunities for the girls who live here.
New Friendships: the girls in Cambray come from different junior houses as well as those who have joined College to study in the sixth form; this provides an opportunity to make new friends.
New Freedoms: as a preparation for student life and independent living, the girls have responsibility for organising their own study time alongside College commitments and the (relative) freedom to go into town for shopping, meals etc.
We hope to maintain a relaxed and informal atmosphere, encouraging the girls to make the most of the opportunities that life in Cambray offers.
I have worked in College since 1981, mainly in the PE department and as time has gone by I have chosen a more pastoral route by training to be a counsellor. I became a Housemistress in 2002 and moved to Cambray in 2004. Every day is different and challenging and it is fun - especially on social occasions. In my time off, I enjoy spending time with my grandson and being able to take my two dogs for lovely walks in the countryside.
