Curriculum Summaries

English

LC1, 2 and 3 Our aim is to broaden and deepen the girls' appreciation of literature and, at the same time, extend their skills in written and spoken English. In each year group girls will study a range of poetry, prose and drama (both pre- and post- 1914 and including literature from other cultures). Each year group will study at least one Shakespeare play. We try to ensure that the necessary language skills are in place in readiness for GCSE work and this includes studying media texts (with particular focus on persuasive language) and travel writing.

UC4/5 (GCSE) All girls prepare for both the Language and Literature GCSE exams, each of which involves some coursework. As in Lower College, a good deal of the language work is taught through the study of literature. The three essays required for the Literature coursework are completed during UC4 and in that year girls may also produce some of the five essays required for the Language coursework files, which are completed in UC5. The minimum number of texts studied for the exams is two plays (one of which will be Shakespeare), two novels and two collections of poetry. In reality, the study of literature ranges more widely. Girls learn and practise the different skills required for the assessed, the best of these marks forming part of their language coursework.
