Curriculum Summaries

English Literature

SFC1 (AS)

Girls study a minimum of six texts which must include poetry and prose. Although knowledge and understanding of work by at least one author published between 1800 and 1945 is required, the emphasis at AS is on modern literature. At least one coursework text must have been written after 1900. The course aims to encourage students to read widely in contemporary literature and become independent, original and critical thinkers. Girls will produce two pieces of coursework during the year and sit one final examination.

SFC2 (A2) Again, the minimum number of texts prepared specifically for the A2 exams is four, but girls' studies will inevitably range more widely, especially in view of the requirements for the synoptic assessment.

IB

The course introduces students to a breadth of literature across genres, periods and cultures, fostering an enjoyment and intellectual engagement with the texts studied. Students are encouraged to read literature as crafted works that can be analysed in a variety of ways and on a number of levels. Students learn the critical skills and vocabulary needed to evaluate what they read and explain their perceptions clearly in both oral and written form; in this the course aims to encourage students to become independent, original and critical thinkers. At Higher Level students will study 15 texts; at Standard Level they will study 11 texts. As a requirement of the course, these will include, alongside texts from a variety of genres and periods, world literature and Shakespeare.
