Curriculum Summaries
Learning Support
Teachers in the Learning Support Department plan and teach lessons to support the development of specific skills-areas required by individual pupils. Lessons are tailored to meet individual needs and lesson planning is flexible and responsive.
ESL coaching
An ESL course of study may include any or all of the following, in different proportions:
- Listening skills maintaining attention, listening comprehension, establishing eye contact, seating position (for good vision and avoidance of distraction)
- Speaking skills fluency, pronunciation, presentational skills, participation in lessons, explanations, confidence, vocabulary development
- Reading skills fluency, decoding, comprehension (including inference), interpretation, contextual information, efficient reading: skimming and scanning, question/task analysis
- Writing skills sentences, sentence structure, spelling (including subject-specific spellings), punctuation, apostrophe s, essay planning, proofreading, presentational skills
- Grammar (agreements, verb forms, tenses, pronouns)
Literacy Skills coaching
Literacy Skills development may include any or all of the following, in different proportions:
- Listening skills maintaining attention, listening comprehension, establishing eye contact, seating
- position (for good vision and avoidance of distraction)
- Speaking skills fluency, presentational skills, participation in lessons, explanations
- Reading skills fluency, decoding, comprehension (including inference), interpretation, contextual information, efficient reading: skimming and scanning, question/task analysis
- Writing skills sentences, sentence structure, spelling (including subject-specific spellings), punctuation, apostrophe s, essay planning, proofreading, presentational skills
- Grammar (agreements, verb forms, tenses, pronouns)
Mathematics coaching
The lessons are planned to address:
- Areas being worked on in Mathematics lessons
- Areas of specific difficulty
- Mathematical vocabulary
- Revision skills preferred learning styles, auditory learning, visual learning, active learning, multi-sensory learning, revision timetables, memory
- Examination technique time management, stress management, question analysis, preparing for exams (health matters: exercise, sleep, relaxation, diet)
Lessons provide additional practise and opportunities to review work. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions and explain thinking.
Study Skills coaching
This may include any or all of the following, in different proportions:
- Listening skills establishing eye contact, seating position (for good vision and avoidance of distraction), maintaining attention, listening comprehension
- Speaking skills participation in lessons, explanations
- Reading skills efficient reading: skimming and scanning, question/task analysis
- Writing skills presentational skills, essay planning, subject-specific spellings, proofreading
- Personal organisation use of academic planner, organisation of possessions (packing bag, organisation of locker), time management (personal punctuality and punctuality of prep), self-motivation
- Revision skills preferred learning styles, auditory learning, visual learning, active learning, multi-sensory learning, revision timetables, memory
- Examination technique time management, stress management, question analysis, preparing for exams (health matters: exercise, sleep, relaxation, diet)
