Curriculum Summaries

Physical Education

All girls follow a well balanced Physical Education curriculum, which aims to involve them in sport, regardless of ability.

UC4 (GCSE)

Autumn Term Concept of health and fitness, nutrition and sport, skeletal system.

Spring Term Muscular system, circulatory system, respiratory system.

Summer Term Principles of training, physiological and psychological factors and their affect on performance, technology and sport.

UC5 (GCSE)

Autumn Term Health and safety in sport, influence of attitudes within society on sport.

Spring Term Social and cultural aspects of sport, sponsorship and media in sport.

Summer Term Organisation of sport in the UK, revision.

SFC1 (AS) Physiological and psychological factors which improve performance:

Physiological factors:
Training and fitness, muscular and skeletal system, circulatory system, respiratory system, nutrition.

Psychological factors:
Skill acquisition, nature of skilled performance, principles of learning, theories of learning, information processing, turning theory into practice.

Socio-Cultural and historical effects on participation in physical activity and their influence on performance:
Concept of physical education and sport, public and state school influence on the development of sport and physical education, social factors concerning the development and participation within sport and physical education, government policies concerning physical education.

Analysis and evaluation of the factors which improve performance. Planning, performing and evaluation a training programme. Written project - observation and analysis of performance within sport.

SFC2 (A2) Physiological, biomechanical and psychological factors which optimise performance:

Physiological and biomechanical: Fitness and training, energy systems, Newton's laws and their application to sporting performance.

Psychological factors: Personality and attitudes, aggression and its relationship within sport, arousal and the effect on performance, attribution, social learning, group dynamics, group cohesion, leadership, optimising performance, goal setting.

Factors affecting the nature and development of elite performance: World Games; deviant behaviour within sport, media and commercialism within sport; gender issues within sport; sport and ethnicity; functions and policies of sport organisations; comparative research with France and America.

Analysis and critical evaluation of factors which optimise performance. Written project - the analysis of performance; synoptic assessment.
