Department Reviews

ECONOMICS

The Economics department began its first teaching of the International Baccalaureate this year and, with these students, more than one third of the sixth form now study the subject.

Due to our close links with the Edexcel examination board we were asked during the autumn to host one of a series of three seminars spread around the country, exploring the causes of the credit crisis. Allan Hodge and Rachel Cole gave illustrated talks on aspects of the problem to a large, enthusiastic audience of economics teachers. Rachel Cole, as Principal Examiner, has continued to raise the profile of the CLC Economics department with her participation in external conferences and public benefit teaching.

Young Enterprise at College goes from strength to strength, with three firms comprising 45 girls showing their entrepreneurial skills at several levels. All three were invited to the Gloucestershire Finals in May. The teams gave presentations in the Pump Rooms and, along with nine other prizes and commendations, were awarded First Prize for Best Financial Performance and Runner-Up Best Presentation (both Storm). For the third year, the department has overseen the business aspects of our new LC2 Enterprise Education project (in effect a junior version of Young Enterprise) and all who witnessed the skills and enthusiasm of the pupils at the Fête will have been impressed with their acumen and flair. They raised a very large sum of money for the College charities, surpassing the sixth form students in terms of return on capital.

Part of our work each year involves the invitation of external speakers and, in March, we were very pleased to welcome Mr Kevin Butler, Bank of England Agent for the South West, who gave an excellent presentation on monetary policy and the Bank’s reaction to the difficult credit conditions. As usual, our students asked penetrating questions and kept the speaker on his toes. Both SFC1 and SFC2 enjoyed conferences in London in April, with the IB students attending one at Coventry University in June.

The department has now authored a large and growing number of articles and books. In addition, Rachel Cole has enjoyed a sabbatical during the second half of the summer term and has been working hard to develop an economics website. We are an outward-looking department and aim to immerse ourselves and our students in real world economics as much as possible.
