The winter games of hockey, netball and lacrosse are as popular as ever and all age groups have worked hard to obtain some excellent results.
The highlight of the year for hockey was the Under 18 Indoor team making it through to the National Indoor Finals weekend in January. The team played some fantastic indoor hockey and they finished a highly respectable joint 5th overall. We saw three out of the two teams finish as runners up in the Gloucestershire round of the National Schools competition. Several girls gained representative honours this term. Nine girls were selected for the Under 14 County squad, four girls were selected for the Under 15 squad, three for the Under 17 squad, two for the Under 19 squad. Two girls were also selected for their region (Emily Sumaria – West of England and Issy Davies – Midlands). In addition, four girls from LC1 attended a talent spotting session and from this have been selected to attend further development Centres within the County.
The Under 13A hockey team won the Cheltenham & District Tournament in the sring term, while the Under 15A hockey team had a fantastic season and were undefeated and produced some fantastic hockey over the two hockey terms.
All the County netball tournaments were held at our new courts at Well Place, which certainly provided a good home advantage for the CLC teams. The U14 team retained the title of County Champions and attended the South West regional tournament to represent Gloucestershire, where they finished fifth in their section. The U19 team had a highly successful County Tournament, taking the title by beating Farmors in the final. The girls had a brilliant run of games at the regional tournament, almost beating Millfield, who were eventual winners. The team finished fourth in their section.
Lacrosse teams continue to thrive. The U15 team had an unbeaten season winning the Welsh Rally and the West Tournament, finishing in the top 8 in the country. The whole team were selected for County, four players selected for Regional Centex, with one player, Harriet Newton, selected for National Centex, Sarah Murray representing Wales and Katrina Baxter representing Scotland. The 1st team also had a successful season, coming runners up in the Welsh Rally, finishing in the top division at the West Tournament and in the top 12 teams at Nationals. There were players representing County at U19 level, four players reaching Regional Centex with Abi Flynn selected for National Centex. Abi Flynn and Alex Walvis also played for the West Region. The Junior teams represented College at several tournaments, reaching the top divisions.
The Intermediate Cross Country team qualified for the National Final of the Cup competition, where Imogen Simmonds finished 10th. At the District championships, fourteen girls were selected to run for the Cheltenham area in the County Championships with four progressing to the South West Finals and Imogen Simmonds selected to run for Gloucestershire at the Nationals Schools Cross Country Championships.
Our Senior swim team qualified as 12th fastest team for the National Schools relay finals in Sheffield. At the Cheltenham and District Schools Gala, College won the overall girls event having eight 1st places, twenty 2nd places and twelve 3rd places.
Polo in College continues to thrive and in January six girls enjoyed another highly beneficial trip to Argentina where they trained and played alongside professional players and up and coming youngsters. Both the arena and outdoor seasons were extremely busy but perhaps the highlight for everyone was the inaugural Old Girls match which was played at Longdole on the 4th May which, despite inclement weather, proved to be a very even and enjoyable affair. Particular congratulations to Abi St Quinton who was selected to play for Young England in a series of test matches this summer against Young India and Young Dubai.
The Ski team had a very successful year competing in the British Schoolgirls’ Ski Races in Flaine, France. The team all competed in the Slalom and Grand Slalom course as well as the team event, the Parallel Slalom. Stef Ovenden had a tremendous competition, winning the silver medal after finishing second in the overall combined events. Ophelia Taylor also won medals coming second in the slalom in her age category and third in the combined competition. The team finished in tenth place in the combined competition which was a fantastic achievement in a competition with over 40 teams.
Our second Sports Dinner proved as successful as our first. Alistair Humphries gave an entertaining and inspirational speech about his four year cycle trip around the world and presented prizes to Team of the Year – U15 lacrosse team, Outstanding Achievement – Sarah Hopkinson, Lifetime achievement award – Alex Walvis and Sports Personality of the Year - Alex Walvis
The beginning of the athletics season was very busy as all the athletes tried to get early competitive experience and a particularly successful addition to the calendar was a relays only event at the Prince of Wales Stadium. 10 girls were selected to compete at the County Championships. The Intermediate team (LC3 & UC4 girls) qualified for the A final in the regional round of the National Track and Field Cup.
The rowers have competed at numerous time trials and regattas including The Schools’ Head, raced over the University Boat Race course in reverse, The National Junior Sculling Championship at Henley, Evesham Regatta, Wycliffe Heads, The Ball Cup Regatta at Dorney Lake, Eton, (where the J16 four won a gold medal), Nottingham City Regatta, and the National Schools’ Regatta. Two of our best rowers, Mini Monteith and Florence Sivell, are now preparing to row in Junior pairs at the GB National Championships during the summer holiday.
In the Midland's Girls Schools Tennis 97th Lawn Tennis Tournament, the first pair, Alex Walvis and Georgina Jefferies, came third in their section. The second pair, Miki Simpson and Steph Chung, won 'The Second Couple Tournament’. In the Gloucestershire School Girls’ Doubles Tournament, held at CLC’s new tennis courts at Well Place, the U18 team came third, the U16 pair came third and the U14 pair also came third. Our Aberdare Cup team competed in a nail biting match against Malvern St James in the 3rd round and were unlucky to lose in a tense match tie-break 9-11.
