The public examination results continue to maintain the high standards of previous years with most pupils achieving top grades. Two GCSE Textiles Technology and three Food Technology pupils were placed among the top ten in the country.
SFC Product Design Textiles Technology pupils enjoyed a talk early in the year by David Lussey, the inventor of Quantum Tunnelling Composite Material, a new type of metal polymer, which has a modern application in the production of smart clothing. Pupils were given the opportunity to wear a smart jacket where the sleeve features a control panel for the operation of a personal stereo. They were also able to evaluate an innovative rucksack which incorporated a solar panel.
Guest speaker Emma Harrup, Costume Designer at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford upon Avon, gave an inspirational talk to GCSE and A Level pupils on the designing and making of costumes for Shakespearean plays. Pupils were given the opportunity to evaluate the designs and workmanship involved in making costumes.
The Clothes Show Live continues to be a popular trip. Pupils draw inspiration from the latest fashions and trends for their coursework. They have the opportunity to attend one of the world’s largest spectacular catwalk shows. A little shopping therapy at the end of the day is always most welcome. The London Graduate Fashion Week Education Day at Earls Court was also attended by SFC1. Pupils explored the courses on offer in fashion, design and technology and viewed the work of the most talented emerging designers. They also attended a Fashion Careers Convention.
As part of the Saturday enrichment programme, LC3 pupils were challenged to design and make fun hats. Each pupil’s work was unique. Hats ranged from double layered polar fleece to dainty designs suitable to wear at Ascot.
Educational visits for pupils studying Food Technology at GCSE included an exciting day at Cadbury World in Birmingham. This trip included a fascinating presentation on new product development and large scale chocolate manufacture. The girls were amazed to learn that 1.5 million Cadbury Cream eggs could be produced in 24 hours! The girls were also given the opportunity of piping their names in chocolate.
Pupils from all year groups have also had the opportunity to expand their culinary education and practical skills by attending the popular weekly Cookery Club. In conjunction with the Modern Languages department, pupils have been involved in producing German, Spanish and French cuisine. Also, for the first time, girls enjoyed making sushi under the instruction of Mrs Takahashi, College’s Japanese Language Coach.
The department has been heavily involved in Project Week. A group of LC1pupils led by Mrs Mitchell designed and made costumes for their production of The Wild Swans by Hans Christian Andersen. LC2 pupils studied ‘Structures’ as their theme for the week. They made House Cakes which afterwards were taken to some primary schools where they were enjoyed by all.
