The Cheltenham Ladies' College was founded in 1853 to provide an education for girls on Christian lines and, five years later, appointed its most famous Principal, Miss Dorothea Beale, who was to remain in office until her death in 1906. Miss Beale believed that the education of girls was as important as that of boys and under her guidance the College flourished, acquiring many beautiful buildings in the centre of Cheltenham , including the Princess Hall, first used in 1898 and still the focal point of the College when used for morning assembly. The early and sustained success of the College drew girls from all over the country and beyond and boarding houses were established to house them. Miss Beale played a major role in developing educational facilities beyond College, including the opening of St. Hilda's in Cheltenham as a teacher training college and St. Hilda's Hall, subsequently St Hilda's College, in Oxford .
The College Council has continued to develop buildings and facilities of high quality whilst successive Principals have ensured that the curriculum has kept pace with the best of modern educational thinking. The rigorous development planning system in College ensures teachers and housemistresses have the best possible resources for their work and girls have comfortable and well-maintained places in which to study and live.
The College spends about a million pounds annually maintaining its buildings and physical resources. It is also committed to maintaining excellent staff to pupils ratios in both the academic and pastoral spheres - because we believe in their importance.
