Community Links
Girls at College are encouraged to take an active role in our local community enabling them to give something back to the area in which we live and work. We hope that after seeing the difference they can make and experiencing the rewards that come with getting involved locally, they will continue to make a difference and strive for a better world once they leave us.
This year a record number of girls enrolled on one of the projects offered through our Community Links programme. The range of activities girls are involved in includes:
Visiting the elderly at local residential homes
"I visit an elderly lady called Anne every Thursday, I am the only person to visit Anne on a regular basis and she can get very lonely. Some of the residents do not have any visitors at all, mostly because of a lack of family, so there are plenty of opportunities to help. I feel privileged to know Anne and look forward to many more visits." George
Helping at some of our local primary schools and special schools
"Over 40% of the children at the school I work with are in care. Most of them do not have the chance to read aloud at home or receive the attention that so many of us were privileged to, so individual attention that we can give to pupils is all the more meaningful and we get to know each individual child." Volunteering at Gloucestershire Animal Welfare Association and Cheltenham Animal Shelter
"It is extremely rewarding, being able to help not only the community in general, but also the animals individually, who are always heartbroken when you leave them." Izzy
Cooking breakfasts for the charity Cheltenham Open Door
"About 60 people come to Open Door each Sunday and around a third of these have no home, often whole families come along. It is a voluntary organisation and at the forefront is Enid who has been cooking the breakfasts every Sunday for the past 12 years, so she really appreciates our help!" Rosie
