College Athletes crowned Cheltenham and District Year 9 Champions
The 2012 Cheltenham and District Year 9 Athletics Championships were held at The Prince of Wales Stadium on 13 June. It was a chance to see some stunning performances by the CLC athletes. The team came through the final events in fine form to take the overall victory. With just four events remaining we were tied on equal points with Pate’s Grammar School, but strong performances by Georgia Gordon and Isabella Crane in the 200m final (first and sixth respectively), Chisom Mbadguah and Zoe Orimoloye in the high jump (first and fourth respectively), Sydney Sopher in the discus (first place) and Isabella Crane, Zoe Orimoloye, Helena Silewicz and Georgia Gordon in the relay (second place) secured the team win.
Exceptional individual performances were seen by Chisom Mgbadguah in the high jump. She had the exciting opportunity to attempt to break the Championship record of 1m 50cm. Georgia Gordon set a new personal best of 4m 94cm in the long jump to win the event. She came very close to breaking the Championship record of 5.06 set by Suzie Awoliyi from CLC in 1999. Georgia Gordon won both the long jump and the 200m, and Sydney Sopher won both the shot and the discus. Emma Meecham-Jones excelled in the 800m. She confidently took on the whole field leading from the gun and ran a brilliantly paced race crossing the line in a time of 2:40.
These are some excellent results ahead of the County Championships on Saturday and the ESAA Cup Regional Finals on Wednesday next week. I am extremely proud of how well all of the athletes competed last night, and the sportsman-like manner with which they conducted themselves.
