Gamelan comes to CLC
Last week the LC1’s welcomed a Gamelan workshop into Parabola Arts Centre and spent the day experiencing different musical apparatus from Indonesia. Typically from the islands of Bali or Java, Gamelan is a musical orchestra featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, drums, gongs, bamboo flutes and bowed and plucked strings.
The girls learned about the history of Gamelan and how varying forms of Gamelan assemblies are distinguished by their collection of instruments, use of voice, repertoire, style and cultural context. The workshop was a fun and exciting day for the girls who were encouraged to produce their own ensembles in groups before coming together to create a class piece. After a few practices and lots of giggling, the girls proved that no two Gamelan orchestras sound the same.
