Lizzie Hayward, a pupil in her final year at College, has successfully auditioned for, and accepted, the prestigious appointment of Organ Scholar at Chelmsford Cathedral for the academic year 2005-2006.
This is a unique learning opportunity for a Gap Year student who wishes to study music and Lizzie has won this scholarship against fierce competition from other hopeful students, including graduates. She is a talented young musician – an organist, pianist, singer and violist - who will benefit greatly from the rich musical experience that this scholarship will provide. Here at College she makes a major contribution to the musical life, including playing the organ for Prayers on a regular basis.

Lizzie travelled to Chelmsford on 8 February to undertake her audition. After an hour’s practice on the hitherto unknown organ, she played a Chorale Prelude by J S Bach and a Fugue by Duruflé. She was then subjected to testing in sight-reading, transposition, hymn-playing and improvisation, culminating in accompanying the Director of Music’s mini choir practice. The rigorous process concluded with an aural interview with the Cathedral’s Canon Precentor and both the Director and Assistant Director of Music.
During the course of her scholarship, Lizzie will gain experience on the organ and as a rehearsal accompanist for the choir. She will be expected to play occasional voluntaries and accompany the choir anthem during some services, and will play a full rôle in the daily life of the department and Cathedral family, including playing for weddings and funerals. We know Lizzie will thrive in this environment and wish her every success.

College has again, this year, enjoyed success with applications to study at the much sought after, and often over-subscribed, colleges of Oxford or Cambridge with 26 girls being offered places.
We warmly congratulate all our girls. One successful applicant said
I’m really happy, and so grateful to all my teachers who helped me along the way!
Special congratulations to last year’s Senior Prefect, Jemima Kettle, who has gained a place at Keble College, Oxford, to read English. Principal Vicky Tuck said:
Jemima was a remarkable girl and considering how much additional responsibility she shouldered last year during our 150th, we are especially proud and pleased for her.Jemima elected to take a Gap year and is currently enjoying time in Peru, where she is an expedition leader.
