Inter House Polo Tournament at Longdole

Inter House Polo Tournament at Longdole

17 November 2008

This Autumn term saw the launch of the first Inter House Polo Tournament at Longdole. A number of keen players joined forces to create six house teams playing two chukkas each, in two evenly-matched divisions. Having been provided with a delicious lunch in the clubhouse and following some tactical scheming, parents, girls and staff saw some fabulous team play between senior, junior and novice players. Fierce competition in Division I saw St Margaret’s (Annie Styler, Caz St Quinton and Alice Anderson) emerge victorious with two superb wins, followed by a combined team from St Helen’s/Glenlee (Lulu Burton, Cecily Higham and Amabel Clark) with Farnley (Cece Cardale, Anna Rowlinson, India Dunn and Ria Sugden) in third place.

In Division II there was even closer fought rivalry with the final placings being decided on goal difference, meaning Glengar/Bellairs (Claudia Buck, Imogen Dalivalle, India Dunn and Ria Sugden) ran out the eventual winners, beating St Clare (Perdy Humfrey, Antonia Dalivalle and Cameron Gardner) with St Austin’s (Brigitte and Jenny Kozena and Zoe Laxton) taking third place.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, with some excellent play being exhibited as well as a good mingling of abilities which allowed novices to develop their game and gain vital playing experience while the more experienced players got back into the swing of things in readiness for the arena season ahead. I sincerely hope that this enjoyable tournament will continue annually, allowing the sport to thrive within CLC and provide much more fun for years to come. Many, many thanks to Miss Ralph for all her hard work in organising such a great event.

England’s Under 16 International Hockey Training Squad

England’s Under 16 International Hockey Training Squad

17 November 2008

Isobel Davies from The Cheltenham Ladies’ College has been selected for England’s Under 16 International Hockey Training Squad. This announcement was made after the England Hockey Futures Cup was contested at Cannock Hockey Club and the completion of a High Performance Assessment Camp for Under 15s and Under 17s. Issy will take part in further assessment camp activity at Bisham Abbey over the weekend of 21-23 November 2008 and the final National Under 16 squad for 2009 will be selected from this assessment camp.
Issy started playing hockey when she was eight and decided to try being a goalie because she was a good football player. She trains hard with the College 1st team during the week and has an extra goalie training session and a visit from her coach each week. When not representing College on the hockey field, she plays for Worcestershire or Stourport, her home club. Watching the Olympics this summer has really inspired Issy and strengthened her resolve to achieve her goal of representing England.

College Success at Debating and Public Speaking

14 November 2008

Congratulations to Hannah Gladman and Jess Hart who took part in the first round of The Midland Schools’ Debating Competition in Birmingham. The girls had to propose the motion, ‘This House believes that capitalism is a discredited economic system’. Both girls performed very well, won their debate and progress to the next round after Christmas.

Last Thursday, Stephanie Payne, Olivia Brown and Romilly Tahany took part in the area round of the English Speaking Union Public Speaking Competition. Stephanie spoke on ‘Freedom is an illusion’ while Olivia chaired and Romilly questioned a speech on positive discrimination. All girls spoke very impressively and they won the round. Romilly was awarded ‘Best Questioner’. The girls will now take part in the Area Final.

The Jessie Scrivener Prize

The Jessie Scrivener Prize

14 November 2008

On Tuesday, 47 girls in College took part in the annual Jessie Scrivener Speech Prize Competition. Jessie Scrivener taught in College for 43 years from 1899 to 1942. An actress herself, her career was curtailed following two accidents which left her lame. With enormous resolve and foresight, Miss Beale invited her to Cheltenham to her new school and sought her help in making Cheltenham Ladies’ College as famous for beautiful speech as many hoped it might be for learning. This courageous appointment of an actress as a teacher gave a big boost to what was then a new practice of introducing acting into the education of women – an effective way of ensuring that future teachers would have the unique gift of communicating through the art of the spoken word.

In later years a group of ex-pupils and friends realised just how remarkable this woman had been and established a memorial prize for her, to be awarded annually.

The event on Tuesday proved beyond doubt that the art of poetry reading is as strong as ever in College and it was a pleasure to hear so many varied and wonderful poetry recitals - everything from Roald Dahl to Wilfred Owen, T.S. Eliot to Monty Python, and Christina Rossetti to J R R Tolkien.

In Lower College, Emily Hopper was highly commended and the winner was Lola Szczotarska.

In Upper College, Harriet Newton was highly commended and the joint winners were Lucy Feibusch and Alex Morton.

In SFC, Lucinda Ellis was highly commended and the winner was Lucy Gamble.

Principal's Lecture Series - Rod Jaques

Principal's Lecture Series - Rod Jaques

22 October 2008

On Saturday 11th October College held the first in the series of the Principal’s Lectures, a termly event in which girls, parents and guild members gather to hear an external speaker. This term we were delighted to welcome Dr Rod Jaques as our visiting speaker, a fellow of the Institute of Sports & Exercise Medicine in London and, more recently, one of the doctors who accompanied the British team to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Dr Jaques gave us an intriguing insider’s account of the games, with particular reference to the medical challenges facing team GB. From chewing gum to constant hand washing, the athletes were put through a rigorous drill to keep them at the highest level of health. Dr. Jaques’ talk emphasised the link between physical health and mental health, and made us appreciate how the winner will have not only the fittest and healthiest body but also the greatest level of determination to win. Dr Jaques played a ‘motivational’ film clip during the talk which powerfully illustrated the incredible intensity of competition in the Olympics. In some instances, a mere 0.01 of a second separates the gold and silver medallist. Statistics like these only serve to highlight the importance of Dr Jaques’ work in keeping the British team at their peak fitness, and made us realise how much of Britain’s success is owed not only to the athletes themselves but to the doctors and other people in supporting roles who minster to them.

Girls Go Green

The Girls' School Association (GSA), held an environmental awareness day on Monday 6th October. Girls came into College wearing green themed clothing including some fabulous designs made out of newspaper. The day started with prayers from members of College’s Environment Group who talked about the importance of involvement by every member of the College community. As girls and staff left the Princess Hall they were asked to write an environmental pledge or wish to hang on the CLC Wish Tree which was created for the day by the Art Department. During the course of the day work began on developing the wild life garden within College and in order to reinforce the green theme, buns with appropriate colour icing were served!

Football

In the Independent Girls School Tournament on Sunday, College was represented by an U14 and U18 side. The U14s drew 5 and lost one of their pool matches. In the final, the team raised their game playing superbly to force the final to penalties, just losing 4 - 2. The U18 team quickly got into their game play, scoring nine goals within their group, with Alice Latham responsible for six. These fine performances took them through to the semi final.

Team places are awarded to Catherine Greaves, Allegra Ayida, Katie Roth, Kath Fok, Kar-Anne Tan, Alice Latham and Juno Malony.

Hockey

In matches against Malvern College the 1XI, 2XI and U15A and U14A all won. In matches against Downe House the 3XI and U14B team played well and produced draws and the U15 B team won 3 – 0.

The Under 18 team took part in the National Schools County Round. The team won all 4 group games and did not concede one goal. The team faced Dean Close in the final. The game was intense and exciting, with the results being 1 - 1 after full time and remained the same after extra time. This meant Penalty strokes which thanks to the dominant presence of Issy Davies in goal and cool heads from the players we won 5-3. The team will now represent the County of Gloucestershire at the West round of the National Schools Hockey Tournament in November. This is the first time CLC has won this highly competitive tournament in 14 years.
