Government and Politics
“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and mis-applying the wrong remedies.”
Studying A Level Politics at College will help girls to decide whether they agree that politicians are uniformly venal and incompetent.
The department offers extensive co-curricular activities for girls to further enrich their studies, including the History Society, the Politics Society and a regular trip to Parliament.
In addition to overseas trips and societies, girls regularly attend events at the Cheltenham Literature Festival along with lectures further afield. In recent times, College has hosted the Business Secretary, the director of Liberty and many other current and former MPs.
Further help is given to students with ambitions to study the subject at a higher level, including interview classes and supervision of research topics in the IB Extended Essay or for the Extended Project Qualification.
Sixth form classes follow the Edexcel syllabus. Topics include the EU, pressure groups, the environment, political parties and the Welfare State.
