We are incredibly grateful to have been selected as one of the semi-finalists in the Technovation Girls’ Competition, and are proud to be the only team qualified from the United Kingdom.
Struggling to find a suitable digital period tracker for teenagers, we saw an opportunity for innovation. Our vision was simple - to make menstrual health management and education accessible and stigma-free, ensuring that young girls can make informed decisions about their bodies. In this manner, HerProsperity was created.
What differentiates us from other apps in the market is how we gamify education. Moreover, every feature developed was decided through in-depth primary research. We interviewed healthcare professionals ranging from medical students to graduate doctors, through which we learnt what menstrual health topics deserved the most attention. We also surveyed 120 students to better understand their experiences with period apps, and found out that despite using them, there were still lots of misconceptions surrounding this topic.
Creating initial prototypes for the mobile user interface (UI) was an arduous task that involved turning many complex ideas into a tangible output. We each designed a preliminary UI to visualise how we imagined this app would look, then we discussed the strengths and ways to improve its weaknesses. Additionally, to ensure that the content provided by HerProsperity is accurate, all information was gathered from credible databases such as PubMed and the World Health Organisation.
As a result, we developed three carefully considered features:
HerTracker - a straightforward and interactive feature that monitors your cycle. It will generate rough predictions for your menstruation start and end dates, from the previous time frames you have inputted. There will also be a daily message featuring encouraging words, as well as a CycleLog to journal your day and record your symptoms.
HerMind - our games! We currently have two modes: “Truth or Myth”, a flashcard-style game with content that aims to debunk myths, and “Match Frenzy”, which helps users learn more about different menstrual health terms.
HerForum - providing a safe space for discussion on menstrual health topics, fostering an inclusive environment for learning and improving confidence among young girls worldwide.
Participating in Technovation has truly been a rewarding experience. From getting out of our comfort zone, learning how to balance school life while building our project, to overcoming challenges during the development of our app, it’s amazing to see how much we’ve grown, both as teammates and young entrepreneurs.
We’re excited to continue developing HerProsperity, where once it is fully developed, we plan to enter beta testing and continue refining our app with real user feedback, with the ultimate goal of bringing this app to empower youth worldwide.
We would also like to share our YouTube channel, which contains our pitch and technical video!
The HerProsperity Team,
Audrey, Mofe & Angelyn
