Engineering Construction Site Visits
On 29th November, we were kindly hosted by RISE to visit the new Pegusus Life development, One Bayshill Road. This allowed our girls to experience civil and structural engineering first-hand. We were shown around the site by Project Manager, Steve Wells, who discussed how extensive planning ensured that the project ran to schedule and budget.
He spoke candidly about how adaptations and creative thinking were needed to tackle unforeseen problems and also about the structural and legislative implications of linking a listed façade to a modern building. During our visit, concrete was being poured on the floor above us and girls were able to see examples of reinforcing steel bars over which the concrete was set.
The following day, our girls were hosted by CLC’s Estates Team, as well as Kier Construction Project Manager, Mr Reuben Edwards, at CLC’s new Health and Fitness Centre. Mr Ian Mincella and Mr Ed Wai spoke to the girls about the design of the roof, from its pitch to practical considerations affecting the truss design.
We planned our visit to coincide with one of the truss sections being delivered and girls were able to see how they joined together and the access panels, which were carefully designed to be concealed after the truss was lifted into place. We could see the detail of planning required at every stage.
The girls can now look forward to revisiting both these developments to witness the next stage in their construction.
