Summer Concert 2016
The Summer Concert was an outstanding way to end the academic year. Miss Harper created an emotional opening to the concert with the String Serenaders performing Benjamin Britten to a very high standard, which set the bar for the rest of the evening. Winners of the Gladys Runge Advanced Prize and Gedge Advanced Prize then took to the stage to show their remarkable talents. Flautist Soo-Jeong Kim (SFC2) gave a very impressive performance and pianist Siobhan Leung (SFC1) received a standing ovation. The evening continued with a selection of Domenico Cimarosa and Edward Elgar, performed expressively by the Symphony Orchestra and giving the audience much to talk about during the interval.
The evening returned with a medley of Studio Ghibli tracks, performed by the Percussion Ensemble. It was an interesting and clever arrangement by Mrs Smith, who conducted the students with great precision. The whole community was then treated to an original piece entitled Water and Fire, by Director of Music Mr Hawley. It consisted of three separate songs for College Choir and Lower College Choir. Both performed tremendously and set a calming atmosphere over the Princess Hall, before the evening ended on a modern note with Hellacapella and the Jazz Band taking the stage.
Hellacapella performed an intricate version of Rather Be by Clean Bandit, and the Jazz Band performed Diggin’ on James Brown by Tower Of Power, conducted by Mr Keir. Tilly Clark (SFC1), the lead vocalist from Jazz Band, closed the night with a remarkable performance, demonstrating an extraordinary vocal range. Thank you to everyone who supported the Summer Concert.
