Music Tour to Rome, Italy
At the beginning of the summer holidays, the Music Department took 50 girls to Rome for what was possibly one of our hottest but most memorable music tours.
We performed in two beautiful churches in Rome - San Marcello al Corso and Santa Maria in Portico, and were lucky enough to sing as part of Mass in St Peter's in the Vatican.
We stayed in Frascati, a hilltop town south-east of the city. Mr Hawley's last concert as Director of Music was in Orvieto, where the stunning Duomo was our venue. It was an emotional evening, followed by a wonderful celebratory meal in a little family-run restaurant in the town.
For me, other highlights included the constant, spontaneous singing from our girls almost anywhere we went: walking thorough the darkening, ancient and narrow streets of Orvieto as the long crocodile of girls threaded its way back to our coach; at a fabulous public viewing point in Frascati where they quickly drew a crowd; in a car park deep beneath the Vatican itself; emerging from the gloomy and chilly Catacombs of St Callixtus; and finally bursting into song as our flight out of Italy took off - much to the pleasure of the other passengers!
The girls were a pleasure to be with and a credit to College.
