Winners of the Regional Senior Maths Challenge

Gloucestershire Regional Round

Pupils performed extremely well in the recent UKMT Senior Team Maths Challenge, winning the competition and automatically qualifying for next year’s final.

Our team, comprising Yiwen, Ivy and Ariana from SFC1 and Eve from SFC2, competed in the regional round of the Challenge, on Wednesday 21st November.

Nineteen teams participated in the competition, completing three rounds of challenges, such as solving a mathematical cross-number puzzle that demanded high levels of team strategy and communication, not to mention numeracy. The competition was hard-fought, with the leading five teams within a few points of each other after two rounds.

The final ‘shuttle’ round, in which the correct answer to one team-member’s clue relied on the accuracy of the previous member’s, proved most difficult, but our students prevailed, pipping Gloucester High School for Girls and Pate’s Grammar School to the top spot. The girls’ attendance at weekly training sessions and their extra problem-solving practice undoubtedly paid off.

The CLC team will go on to compete against 33 other regional winners at the Senior Team Maths Challenge National Final, which takes place at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London, on Tuesday 5th February 2019.

An unusual component of the final round is a poster competition. Using information sent in advance, the teams have to make a poster incorporating materials that they have prepared while addressing related questions given out on the day. Fortunately we have an A Level Art student within our ranks!

A warm congratulations to the girls, and an extended thanks to everyone who helped with the organisation of the event.
