Strings Masterclass with Kathryn Price

The biannual Strings Masterclass took place in the Council Room on Wednesday 6th November. We were joined by cellist Kathryn Price, Professor at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Four cellists and one violinist, ranging from LC1 to SFC1, performed works by Beethoven, Brahms, Saint-Saëns and Shostakovich.

LC1 student Olivia began with a beautiful performance of 'The Gadfly' by Shostakovich on the cello and Kathryn very much helped her improve her projection of sound through breathing exercises and bow speed.

Jiayi (UC4), our violinist for the evening, performed Beethoven’s 'Spring' sonata with real maturity and Kathryn got Jiayi to bring out a more joyful character in the work.

Gabrielle (UC4) then impressively played the first movement of Saint-Saëns cello concerto. Gabrielle played with much energy and verve and Kathryn really helped with more of the more technical aspects of this demanding piece, such as sustaining bow contact and relaxing the arm when shifting.

SFC1 student Alexia was next playing Beethoven 'Cello Sonata in A major'.  This sophisticated work was played with much maturity by Alexia and Kathryn helped bring out the much needed nuances of phrasing in this piece.

The last work to be performed was Brahms 'Cello Sonata in E minor' by Kaitlyn (UC5). She had a rich tone and Kathryn really got Kaitlyn to bring out more colours in her sound.

My thanks go to Mr Jones and Miss Baldock for their fantastic piano accompanying and to the catering department for providing drinks and nibbles afterwards.
