Talk by Carmen Kilner, Basque Children Association
On Thursday 16th November, six SFC students and three MFL teachers attended a talk presented by Carmen Kilner, a representative of the Basque Children association, at Cheltenham College.
The talk was both thought-provoking and poignant, as it gave a real insight into the experiences of thousands of Basque children between the ages of four and sixteen who were evacuated to the UK during the Spanish civil war of 1936-39.
Carmen, the daughter of a Republican teacher who accompanied many of these children to the UK, gave a moving account of the challenges and the unforgettable experiences of her mother and the children in her care.
We all very much enjoyed Carmen’s talk and gained a better understanding of that turbulent period of history in Spain that forms part of the A Level Spanish course.
