Work experience placement with Barclays

Recently, I participated in a work experience placement with Barclays Cheltenham, in order to gain knowledge about the banking sector, and to develop my interests in finance and business further. My placement was arranged through the PGC, and Ms Mooney was a great help in finding contacts within Barclays. Through this support, I was able to secure a placement over the Half Term break, which turned out to be one of the most enlightening experiences I have ever had.

During my placement with Barclays, I took part in the everyday activities of retail banking. I engaged in data entry using spreadsheets and logbooks, involving various Barclays accounts, and assisted in essential bookkeeping procedures. I participated in routine security procedures that are commonplace in retail banking, including identifying fraudulent cheques, and I shadowed a number of Barclays retail bankers at their appointments. These appointments were illuminating, and I learned plenty about incorporating companies, current accounts, and much more. I also provided technical help to customers using new bank technology, such as the Quick Service Points (QSPs).

Ultimately, I gained a greater knowledge and appreciation for retail banking, and learned to embody the Barclays Code of Conduct. I cannot recommend this placement enough for anyone who would like to broaden their knowledge about banking. I would like to thank Ms Mooney and the PGC for this wonderful opportunity, and the bankers at Barclays Cheltenham for their guidance during my placement.
