History of Art Trip to Madrid 2024
7th March 2024

Our recent three night History of Art trip to Madrid during the half term was exceptionally memorable as we delved into the masterpieces we studied at the start of the year, including Francisco Goya's poignant "Third of May" and Pablo Picasso's powerful "Guernica’’.

The Prado and Reina Sofia museums lived up to their names, but my favourite had to be the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum. I was surrounded by astonishing Monet landscapes, Lucian Freud portraits and Mondrian abstracts.

Engaging discussions with Dr Beard added depth to our understanding, whilst Mrs Mooney's local recommendations led us to discover hidden gems within the bustling capital of Spain. Savouring tapas, croquetas, trying padrón peppers and paellas, indulging in rich dark chocolate churros was a delightful culinary experience.

Our night walks allowed us to visit prominent landmarks like Plaza Mayor, Catedral de la Almudena, and other monumental sites that offered an appreciation for Madrid's rich history. Mrs Mooney took us to a vantage point overlooking the cathedral as dusk settled in. My friend and I stood there, in awe, absorbing the city's beauty.

The trip was impeccably organized, fostering stronger bonds with classmates, and genuinely enriching my understanding of art. ¡No puedo esperar a volver pronto a Madrid!
