International Day of Mathematics 2024
20th March 2024

On 14th March, the Mathematics Department at CLC celebrated the International Day of Mathematics with an array of engaging activities centered around the mathematical constant Pi (π).

The International Day of Mathematics serves as a global observance to recognize the importance of mathematics in various aspects of life. The date, 14th March, is chosen for its numerical representation as 3/14 which corresponds to the first three digits of Pi (3.14), so it is also celebrated as Pi Day.

To mark this occasion, maths teachers organized Pi-themed activities tailored for LC1 students. These activities aimed to foster a deeper understanding of Pi while allowing students to explore its concepts in a hands-on manner.

Students had the opportunity to engage in creating Pi number paper chains; a creative exercise that reinforced the concept of Pi's infinite nature. They delved into practical applications by measuring different circumferences, enabling them to witness first-hand how Pi relates to the geometry of circles. Furthermore, they were challenged to calculate Pi and answer questions about its properties, providing them with a chance to apply their mathematical skills in problem-solving scenarios.

The feedback from LC1 students was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing their enjoyment and appreciation for the activities. The event not only provided a platform for fun, but also served as a valuable learning experience, allowing students to develop new skills and deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts.
