Academic Scholars

Inquisitive Minds

Academic Scholars at Cheltenham Ladies’ College are driven by curiosity - a desire to question, explore and understand the world in greater depth.

We encourage and support our scholars to explore opportunities and possibilities that are deliberately wide and expansive. We encourage them to question as well as answer and to think as well as learn.

Our Academic Scholars’ Programme is designed to extend learning beyond the classroom, creating space for ideas, discussion and intellectual risk-taking.

Learning Beyond the Curriculum

Scholars are encouraged to go further: to look beyond the specification, challenge assumptions and engage with complex, real-world questions.

Through a programme of extension, discussion and independent enquiry, students develop the confidence to think for themselves, and to articulate their ideas with clarity.

Our Academic Scholars are active contributors to College life - inside and outside the classroom. They lead discussions and support others, bringing energy, insight and challenge.

Our Academic Scholars play a key role in the life of College and have access to a wealth of opportunities designed to enrich, inspire and challenge them to think critically

Forum 42

Our Forum42 Society offers opportunities and enrichment to stretch and inspire our pupils. The number 42 pays homage to Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy in which it is the answer given by a supercomputer to “the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything”.

Internal peer-to-peer TEDx style talks on topics as varied as 'The History of Rugby' to 'Can Science disprove free will?' are complimented by external talks from wide-ranging speakers. We have recently welcomed the Head of an Oxbridge College, an aerodynamicist, the first female three-star RAF officer, the founder of a gospel music festival and a theologist.

Forum 42: Sophie Harker
On Monday 10th November, we had the pleasure of welcoming Sophie Harker for the second time. Sophie is a British engineer and aerodynamicist, and more recently, in her own words, “a professional juggler” due to the project she is currently managing.

Forum 42: Three Humans on a Sofa
In our latest edition of Forum42: Three Humans on a Sofa, Mr Hawley, Dr Webb, and Miss Constantine came together to discuss the question: “Is there a beat behind breakthroughs?”
