Catch up on the latest sporting highlights at CLC.
In our match against Bromsgrove, we saw excellent racing and five new personal bests. A special mention goes to Audrey (SFC1), who set a new overall and age group record in the 50m Breaststroke, breaking a record that had stood for eight years. Congratulations to Audrey and all who raced!
We have some exciting results from our Rackets Tournament held here on Saturday. We proudly hosted the annual Squash and Badminton Schools Tournament, welcoming competitive teams from Malvern College, Downe House, Cheltenham College, St Edward’s School, and Millfield School.
In Squash, both of our teams put in superb efforts. The U18 team earned a fantastic second-place finish, narrowly missing out on first. The U16 team also achieved an excellent second-place overall. Well done to everyone on the Squash teams!
The excitement continued on the Badminton courts, where we saw some incredible victories. Our U18 team demonstrated exceptional skill, winning their entire competition! Our U16 team followed suit, winning their competition as well!
A huge congratulations to all our racket players for their phenomenal achievement, and this truly shows the commitment and hard work of every player throughout the year.
Our Junior and Inter teams competed in the English Schools’ Cross Country Cup County Round. The Juniors tackled just over 2km, while the Inters ran 3km. Both teams showed great focus and determination, digging deep to secure the best possible results for their team. The Junior team finished 5th, and the Inters came 2nd, earning a place in the Regional Final after half term. Well done to everyone who took part!
The group of young people that represented CLC at the South West Regional tournament were, in one word, phenomenal. Every individual who played lacrosse on Saturday embodied and displayed our sporting values of ambition, bravery, commitment, discipline, motivation, optimism, resilience and support.
Success never happens in isolation or as a result of luck. It is always down to a group of people understanding the reasons for action, choosing to pull in the same direction with the same level of effort for the duration of the challenge. A huge well done to the squad as a whole and massive congratulations to those who represented the 1st X, 2025 South West Regional Runners Up!
The Golf Team travelled to Oxfordshire for a match against St Edward’s School. The first pair, Kjersten (SFC1) and Elizabeth (SFC1), had a hard-fought match and were narrowly beaten, as were Maegan (SFC1) and Vivian (SFC1) in the second pair, in an equally close game.
However, victorious with a win in their first match for College were our LC3 pair, Theodora and Gabrielle, holding on to beat a pair of older boys!
Regina (UC5) won the Uswing Mojing junior qualifier with a score of one under par. This qualifies her to play in the Uswing Mojing Junior World Golf Championships and the FCG Callaway World Championships in California next July.
The U19s participated in the Challenge Cup hosted at CLC. The team’s connection and on-court chemistry improved massively throughout the tournament, with some impressive technical passages of play showcasing their skill and discipline. The girls narrowly missed out in a tightly contested semi-final, a result that reflects both their progress and potential for the rest of the season.
Our U13 and U12 teams played against Bromsgrove School, in what proved to be a really positive match experience for CLC. For only their second match of the season, the girls showed great determination and focus, particularly in denying space and maintaining possession. Every player demonstrated noticeable improvement as the games progressed, becoming increasingly confident and effective on court.
The U15 netball team travelled to Dorset for the first round of the Magazine Cup. The girls had not yet played as a team together, and connections between them grew as the game progressed. Unfortunately, we lost out to a very drilled opposition, but there were lots of learnings from all the CLC players.
On Saturday 4th October, Dr Gamblin travelled to the 82,000-seat Twickenham Stadium, home of English Rugby. Dr Gamblin was coaching a Cheltenham Tigers junior side, which included his son, Isaac. The children played in a rugby tournament on the famous Twickenham Stadium pitch and afterwards watched the South Africa vs Argentina men’s sides. Dr Gamblin was a very proud coach and Dad!
What a few weeks for the hockey programme. This week saw U18 indoor qualifiers, U18 outdoor qualifiers, and U14 outdoor qualifiers, as well as two U13 teams in county tournaments, with our A team entering Tier 1 for the first time in recent history.
The U18s battled incredibly hard, indoors, on Monday night, on Emmiline's 18th Birthday, leading in two of their three pool matches but coming up short. On a positive note, we were the only team to score against the eventual champions, well done Anna (SFC2).
The U14 outdoors kept everyone's hearts racing, going unbeaten in their pool but needing penalty shuffles in the semis to reach the final. Huge well done to Maita (LC3), in goal and Mia, Tasha, and Ava (LC2), who all stepped up courageously to take shuffles and are through to the West Regional Finals as joint county champions!
Friday saw the U18s battle hard outdoors to come third in the county tournament, narrowly missing out on the Regional Finals. The U13 legends team fought hard draws in the Tier 2 County Cup in the past, but for the first time Mr Padley can remember, the U13 A’s qualified through to Tier 1 Regional Finals after playing some fabulous hockey, with every player in the squad contributing tremendously.
Saturday saw some fabulous fixtures with Malvern College. Special mention to the U14 team, who won 3-0 in an impressive performance against a strong Malvern side.
Massive congratulations to all the girls who trialled to make the Gloucestershire County Hockey squad. We have lots of CLC girls selected across all the age bands, well done!
Best of luck to our U16 indoor squad, who have their qualifiers at CLC this week and good luck to Mr Padley, who will be representing Wales in indoor competitions this coming Saturday in the K2 arena!
