Geography

“Simply put, Geography is our future. When we look at any issue with the balance and scrutiny that geographical study offers, we move beyond the media hype or political spin. Geography allows us to see the world more clearly.” - Tom Biebrach

Geography is the study of the Earth’s landscapes, peoples, places and environments. It is, quite simply, about the world in which we live. The subject is unique in bridging the social sciences (human geography) with the natural sciences (physical geography).

Geography is taught with an emphasis on making the subject dynamic, contemporary and relevant. We use the most recent information and examples to illustrate the topics being covered. At the heart of studying Geography in College is the desire to find out more about why, and how, various inter-related elements of the world work.

The key to understanding about the world around us is to get out and experience it first hand, which is why the department runs a number of trips and expeditions, including Cheltenham Science Festival events, local river studies, fieldwork in Cornwall and trips overseas to locations as varied as Iceland and Western USA.

Geography is a dynamic, contemporary subject that allows you to gain a real knowledge of many of the inter-relationships that occur in and around our global community.

The department attracts experts for its Geography Conference and the Geography Society meets regularly to discuss the latest issues.
