UC4 Geography Trip to Hengistbury Head 2025
22nd May 2025

The Geography Department planned GCSE Fieldwork for UC4 Geographers to Hengistbury Head, Christchurch Bay in Dorset for their physical geography, data collection and coastal studies.

The weather was fabulous and all students worked effectively as teams to gather accurate data on coastal geomorphology. The data proved the theory of longshore drift as the beach cross sectional areas increased from West to East until the human defences and rock armour groyne.

Students also analysed the decreasing sediment size and increased roundness of sediment, indicating erosion, along the spit formation due to attrition and abrasion. Well done everyone for your hard work on a very hot day and good luck with your Physical UK Coasts and Rivers examination questions next summer!
