Teaching roles
Help us shape fearless futures
A teaching role at College combines pupils who are well-motivated, disciplined, conscientious and willing to learn, with access to excellent resources, professional support and personal development.
As a teacher at CLC, it is your role to engage with the girls, foster curiosity and create a challenging and stimulating classroom environment that motivates them to learn, think independently, take risks, empathise with others and perform to the best of their abilities. There is mutual respect between staff and girls, classes are small and students are encouraged to take an active part in lessons by challenging, debating and developing their viewpoint. Regular, constructive feedback between teacher and pupil, in all aspects of work and play, is at the heart of our success and enables each girl to realise her true potential.
CLC as a workplace
At College we aim to embody excellence, independence and empowerment in the education of young women. The ISI carried out a full Focussed Compliance and Educational Quality Inspection in November 2022, and College was found 'excellent' in every category.
College has approximately 820 pupils aged between 11 and 18 years who come from a wide variety of backgrounds, encompassing 40 different nationalities and speaking over 30 languages. Our academic provision includes GCSEs, AS and A Levels and the IB Programme, underpinned by a comprehensive co-curricular programme.
You would join a staff of around 600 in total, of whom approximately 150 are teaching staff, both male and female, full-time and part-time. They range from new graduates through to staff with years of experience in either the state or independent sectors.
Our teaching model
Our staffing model differs from other schools in that our teaching community is responsible for academic life, tutoring and co-curricular activities only. Teaching takes place on a single main teaching site in the heart of Cheltenham; our boarding and day houses and our sports facilities are located within a 10-minute walk in nearby residential areas.
Teams of live-in Houseparents and House Staff at 15 houses manage boarding and day house matters, including meals, prep and house evening and weekend activities, supported by a 24-hour medical team. Our Wellbeing Programme is integrated within the timetable and a dedicated team lead the PE and sports programmes. For this reason, our teaching roles are non-residential.
Your teaching Ccommitment
A teacher at CLC typically teaches 18 x 55 minute periods per week. All teachers tutor, are attached to a House, and are responsible for a tutor group of around 8 pupils from that House. Teachers give freely of their time outside of lessons, with all committing to co-curricular and enrichment activities, and helping individual pupils with their academic progress.
The typical overall weekly schedule for a full-time academic teacher is 18 teaching contact hours (TCH), representing hours in the classroom teaching students. This is a scheduled teaching hour (55 minutes) assigned by College. In addition, directed time includes 1.5 hours towards tutoring (mentoring and House visits for lunch); 2 hours CPD/meetings (for part-time teachers this will be pro rata of their TCH); 1 hour of academic enrichment, and 6 Saturday mornings across the year. Additionally, there will be some time (approximately 12 hours across the year) required to support students at the House or at College events.

Common questions
We do need to ensure that we have the right level of skills and experience across the teachers in all departments, in order to ensure that we can provide the necessary skills to teach and support our girls. However, where there are opportunities we welcome applications from those who have recently graduated, with or without a teaching qualification. In these situations, you will be provided with a comprehensive support, mentoring and training programme.
Generally all teachers are expected to work 6 Saturday mornings across the year, whether full time or part time. There are some responsibility roles that require more than this, given the nature of the role.
Unlike many other boarding schools, there is no expectation for teaching staff to undertake any duties in the boarding houses. We have a full team of pastoral staff to manage and work in the Boarding Houses. There are opportunities for teaching staff to undertake roles in the management of both day and boarding houses but this is not a requirement. In these circumstances a reduction in teaching load is given as well as appropriate additional remuneration. Teaching staff are, however, always very welcome to get involved in boarding house life if they wish to.
All teaching staff are expected to be involved in at least one co-curricular activity or club and this very much varies according to individual interests.
At CLC the teaching timetable commitment is typically less than other schools, particularly outside of the independent sector. As a full time teacher you will usually have 18 hours of ‘classroom’ teaching (with slightly more for those teaching Music or PE). Time is allocated for lesson preparation and marking, as well as report writing. A reduction in timetabled lessons, along with additional remuneration, is given if additional roles are undertaken – examples of this might include 2nd in department, tutor, EPQ co-ordinator, timetabler.
Changing jobs is an important decision and our recruitment and selection processes are designed to be a two-way process. Recruiting the right people is vital and therefore we ensure that we have in place a robust process. This includes providing all candidates with the opportunity to gain a good understanding of working at Cheltenham Ladies’ College, meeting potential colleagues and students along with getting a good understanding of the role. We do our best to ensure that you enjoy the experience; we will provide you with as much information as possible before the day and are always on hand to answer any questions you have before and on the interview day.
