Last week, during Friday Alchemy Club, students created photographic prints using traditional silver nitrate photography under the close supervision of the Head of Department and a laboratory technician, following all safety protocols and provided recipe method.
Students immersed watercolour paper in a 5% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution and dried it with a hair dryer. The classroom was then darkened, using only red light, while the paper was carefully coated with silver nitrate (AgNO3). Objects were placed on the prepared paper and exposed to a UV lamp for a few minutes, after which the objects were removed, and the prints were immersed in a fixing solution of 5% sodium thiosulphate (Na2S2O3) for 10-15minutes.
Finally, the photographs were rinsed with water (H2O) and hung on pegs to dry.
The girls thoroughly enjoyed the whole process and had great fun experimenting with this hands-on photographic technique.
