On Saturday 4th October, SFC1 French enthusiasts had the “brie-lliant" opportunity to partake in a cheese tasting experience.
Read about the evening from two of our students below.
“First, as we stepped into the classroom, we were immediately transported to a little corner of France. French music filled the air, while red, white and checkered cloth adorned the tables.
“For a brief, magical moment, the screen at the front displaying a scenic backdrop of a Parisian landscape, made us feel as if we had left the halls of CLC and entered France. We kicked things off with a light exercise, matching French descriptions of the cheese with its corresponding English definition. It was a clever way to “melt” into the French mood, while expanding our “cheesy” vocabulary, which came in handy later when we needed to describe the taste and texture ourselves.
“Afterwards, we were offered some non-alcoholic French wine, grape juice and water. Table by table, we were each given a cheese at a time, which we could pair with freshly cut bread. We were introduced to a broad variety of cheeses, originating from all parts of France. From creamy Camembert, crumbly Comté and tangy Roquefort we toured France one bite at a time. We discussed our thoughts and opinions on each cheese, describing the quality, taste and texture all in French, using the vocabulary we had reviewed prior.“It was truly an amazing and enlightening experience, getting out of our comfort zone and experimenting with a range of cheeses from creamy and soft to hard and crumbly, and tangy and sour.
“By the end of the experience, our taste buds were buzzing and our spirits were lifted. We walked away not only with a mouthful of cheese but full of knowledge, laughter, and just a “wedge” more love for French culture.
“We thought it was an excellent way to explore France without visiting it. Who knew learning French would be so “gouda”?
