Animals In Hands 2023
28th September 2023

On Friday 15th September, all of LC1 spent time learning about various animals. We were visited by the ‘Animals in Hands’ charity which specialises in rescuing exotic animals who are being kept as pets when they shouldn’t be.

They brought a constrictor snake, a milk snake, a leopard gecko, a chameleon, two stick insects, a bullfrog, a tenrec, a chinchilla, a tarantula and a melanistic barn owl. The volunteers, James and Mo, were very nice and helpful.

Most of our group were very excited about all of the animals, though some didn’t want to hold them! My favourite part was seeing the tenrec as I had never seen one before. It also looked remarkably like a tiny hedgehog, although according to the volunteers, most of them had never even seen a hedgehog before and were more closely related to a shrew!

We learnt some interesting facts about animal propaganda. For example, tarantulas cannot kill people as their venom is too weak and chameleons do not change colour to be camouflaged, they change colours depending on their mood.

As well as that, we learnt about where they were rescued from and why you should not keep exotic animals as pets. The main reasons are because they can be dangerous, need big enclosures, they’re time-consuming and need lots of attention.

This was a great experience, and we were happy to see and learn about all these different animals. I hope next year's LC1s get to do the same.
