As part of the Art Scholars’ programme, I was lucky enough to have been invited to attend a talk hosted by Dr Beard on the subject of collage. We explored notable artists who utilised collage in their artwork, such as Pablo Picasso and Hannah Hoch, and the use of this media to promote their individual statements.
I was particularly inspired by Picasso’s use of collage in his work to allude to a multitude of notions, and it was the responsibility of the viewer to almost decode his meaning. It was surprising to find what at first sight seemed to be a simple collage involving few shapes and materials, had the ability convey numerous ideas and items. This, I found fascinating, and I hope to try to mimic this concept in my own work now having this knowledge.
Collage is such a beautiful art form to produce a statement, whether that be artistic or even political, and it was interesting to understand how the mood, time and place of the artists heavily influenced their work. Overall, it was a thoroughly inspiring talk and I am keen to expand collage into my artwork more widely in the future.
