Art Scholars' Trip to London 2023
12th April 2023

As part of the Art Scholars' programme, we had the fantastic opportunity to visit the Victoria & Albert Museum on Wednesday 8th March. We not only were able to look at the permanent collection, but also visit The African Fashion exhibition. Being particularly interested in portraiture, I was astounded by the incredible marble busts which were exhibited in the main corridor. The historical and artistic context of the sculptures brought the pieces to life and truly gave character to them, enabling me to further appreciate the artform and look at them in a new light. I felt that I had been transported to ancient Rome.

We had the chance to explore the museum and permanent collections to enjoy all the amazing artworks that it had to offer, including the jewellery collection, which had pieces dating from 3,000 BC. The intricacy and precision that was facilitated to create the beautiful crowns, tiaras, brooches, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and more was incomprehensible and unfathomable. I aspire to incorporate this level of detail in my own work.

The African Fashion exhibition was hugely inspiring; the beautiful, vibrant prints and patterns which the clothing showcased celebrated the human figure, and has encouraged me to include an element of fashion into my own work for GSCE. I would like to experiment with different textiles to introduce a new media into my pieces to create a more interesting dynamic and sense of rhythm and movement. Another UC4 student said that it was “a really fascinating insight into a world of fashion I had never explored before”. Overall, I had a wonderful time. The visit broadened my horizons allowing me to explore new ways of thinking and help inform my work in different and exciting ways.
