On Saturday 4th October 2025, SFC1 students and Art Scholars took part in a workshop with the artist Jeanette Barnes, who works with charcoal to produce vast and exciting cityscapes.
The day started with an eye-opening introduction to architectural illustrations, demonstrating ambitious compositions and bold, varied use of tone and line, which supplemented approaches later in the day. Time was spent in planning and solving compositional issues creatively, and making artistic decisions to maximise the effect of pieces.
“It was great and truly beneficial to be able to dwell on more nuanced skills and planning approaches that, as students, we may neglect.
“I really enjoyed when we used different places around the globe to produce our own city, realising not everything needs to be taken from the photo in every detail, it is important to experiment and push the boundaries.
“The workshop taught me techniques for blending tones smoothly, understanding light and shadow, and enhancing the overall mood of a piece through careful tonal contrasts.
