On Saturday 4th February, SFC1 (Year 12) economics students and Academic Scholars had the opportunity to take part in a real-world finance and investing simulation run by AmplifyMe, a company that runs finance and investing training for universities and major banks.
The workshop gave an overview of the basics of financial investing, why it matters, and what strategies could be used to reduce risk and make profits. There were some fascinating topics discussed, such as the concept of Ethical Investing. Students were then asked to research the five stocks they were investing in, including Bitcoin, Apple, Amazon, Tesla and Meta. There was a quick demonstration of how the system’s interface worked before students jumped into the immersive simulation of the stock market.
The simulation was split up into two 20-minute high-intensity sessions. In the simulation, there were options to buy, sell, or ‘short’ stocks from Bitcoin, Apple, Amazon, Tesla, and Meta. Students had to react quickly to news broadcasts that were displayed every 30 seconds, which described changes in global economic conditions and news about the various companies that the students were investing in.
It was a fantastic opportunity to gain skills in problem solving and reacting quickly to unfamiliar situations. It was particularly helpful for economic students to apply their macroeconomic knowledge and use it in action, as there were many ‘news broadcasts’ included in the simulation that concerned global economies. Additionally, the workshop was an insightful experience for students who are possibly looking to have a career in finance in the future, as it provided an immersive introduction to financial investing.
Overall, the workshop proved to be tough, but also a rewarding learning experience that was thoroughly enjoyed.
