Biology Week aims to celebrate all things biological and this year Biology Week at CLC was a fun-filled week with something on offer for everyone. The week started with an informative Prayers run by our student academic representatives with a focus on the often overlooked Ig Nobel awards. We had multiple ‘Meet the Professional’ talks, which introduced us to interesting and novel careers in biology. The keynote speaker was Guild member Hannah Gladman who encouraged us all to “find our tribe” as she told us about her incredible work with DeepMind. She introduced us to Alpha Fold, which uses Artificial Intelligence to determine the 3D structure of proteins, meaning it has the potential to solve many of the problems the world is currently experiencing. This was an inspirational and thought-provoking talk; one which left a deep impression on us all.
The ‘Meet the Professional’ events opened our eyes to the potential avenues of a degree in the biological sciences and the fact that careers of the future are not linear. Hearing about the role of microbes in waste water treatment and how this process is now environmentally friendly was new to all of us. Furthermore, hearing that a degree in nursing could lead to a career as a research nurse, being involved in clinical trials and making a huge difference to people’s lives, was inspirational. Listening to a microbiologist working at Porton Down, the MOD’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, was amazing; we heard about the methods involved with working with microbes such as Ebola, Covid-19, amongst others.
As always, there were multiple opportunities for our students to get their hands dirty. We planted out our hyacinth bulbs ready for Christmas, investigated what owls have been eating by dissecting owl pellets and we ended the week in the best way possible – a Friday afternoon worm dissection.
We look forward to Biology Week 2023!
