Last Saturday, we launched our new and much-loved event, Bring a Family Member to Row. It was a truly special occasion, with students inviting parents and family members down to the boathouse and taking the lead in teaching them the sport they dedicate so much time and energy to.
Starting on the ergos with the basic stroke sequence, families were soon out on the water putting their new skills to the test. It was a joy to watch students confidently instructing, and occasionally bossing around their parents! The event was filled with warmth, laughter, and genuine camaraderie from start to finish.
We were fortunate with the weather too, the forecasted rain held off just long enough, only beginning as we packed away the boats and finished up.
Many parents shared how much respect they had gained for their daughters after experiencing firsthand just how physically and mentally demanding rowing can be. For many, it was eye-opening not just in terms of the effort it takes to move a boat, but also the sheer amount of equipment, teamwork, and patience involved.
Rowing is such a unique sport. If you haven’t been around it, you often don’t realise what’s involved, not just in terms of the technical skill, but the time, commitment, and resilience it requires. Learning to row is one thing, but learning to row well, truly efficiently and in sync with others is something you never stop perfecting. That’s the beauty of the sport: there’s always more to work on, and always more to learn.
It was a fantastic event, and we are already looking forward to making it a regular feature in our rowing calendar. A huge thank you to all who took part and helped make the day so special.
