British Schoolgirls' Races in Flaine
3rd February 2023

During the last weekend in January, the CLC ski team flew to Flaine in France to take part in the British Schoolgirls’ Races. The sun greeted us warmly and the snow was both soft, to cushion our falls, and smooth, to give us speed in our races. So, it was easy for smiles to peak out from under our balaclavas as we had a great four days on the slopes.

The first two days saw us practising for the races that followed – generally training slalom in the morning followed by giant slalom in the afternoon. I wouldn’t say the training was easy, but our aching legs were soon overshadowed by the pinching, familiar feeling of wind in our faces during our time to free ski afterwards.

This led us to the races. On Monday we tackled the Giant Slalom – everyone followed a good line and sped to the bottom, with special mentions to LC2 (Year 8) student Alice, who placed second in the U14 category, and UC5 (Year 11) student Waka, who placed third in the Non-Registered U18 category.

This was then followed by the parallel slalom which saw the A Team have an exciting few races before sadly being put out. There was a brilliant atmosphere at the finish, as the mountains bore witness to the overpowering sense of togetherness between all the racers.

Finally, on the following day, we competed in the Slalom. With 130 racers, the snow was pushed further and further into the ground around the gates leading to a bumpy course, but, nonetheless, Alice placed second in the U14 category and Waka placed first in the Non-Registered U18 category.

Combining the two, Alice placed an amazing second place in the U14 category, Waka placed first in the Non-Registered U18 category, and we are very proud of the B Team that were the third best B team overall and the second best overall non-registered team!

It was definitely a great experience and we hope the sun will cheer us on again next year at the next British schoolgirls’ races.
