The Cheltenham Education Partnership (CEP) event on Wednesday 29th June discussed inequality in careers provision in schools. We had the opportunity to meet ambitious students from different schools and backgrounds, who insightfully described the struggles many education institutions are experiencing concerning employment prospects, not just in Gloucestershire but across the UK. In five-minute speeches, the student representatives from each school spoke about educational inequality, finding available jobs and how we could, as a society, overcome these impediments and create an egalitarian environment where every promising young person can enter the labour market regardless of their social background.
We became more aware of our good fortune to be able to benefit from the invaluable professional help provided by College in the Professional Guidance Centre, and attending the CEP conference helped us realise that many students our age are encountering obstacles at every corner in their education.
The panel of judges, which comprised specialists from the education system who are proactive in improving the employment prospects for young graduates, also contributed to this unique experience by engaging us in conversations and challenging us to think of questions. They also presented the projects they are currently undertaking to help engage employers with over 59 schools in Gloucestershire.
Overall, attending the CEP conference has opened our eyes regarding the enduring educational difficulties experienced by local young people and has helped us contemplate how we can help to enhance equality and opportunity in the Cheltenham student community. Thank you to Mr Parker, Miss Burston and Mrs Mooney for organising our 10 delegates, and thanks to Cheltenham Bournside School for hosting the event.
