For the eighth episode of the Cheltenham Ladies’ College Podcast, Dr Victoria Sherwood, Head of the Professional Guidance Centre, and Lizzie McCarthy and Chloe Green, our Global Universities Advisors, discuss the Professional Guidance Centre at CLC.
Dr Sherwood explains how College’s approach to achieving student success is to treat everyone as an individual, remembering it’s not a ‘one size fits all’ process when it comes to supporting a pupils future.
“We emphasise this really important notion that there’s no one particular version of success, and that actually you can be successful in very many different ways. It’s not just one route that you’ve got to take.
“Our case-by-case ethos allows us to sit down with each and every student, and think about their situation, the things they want to keep open, their dreams, and try to help them make that an informed reality.” – Dr Sherwood
The PGC supports and encourages all study options - helping students find the right path for them as an individual, whether that be A Level or IB at CLC level, or exploring the variety of options for higher education.
From subject fairs and career fairs, to networking events and employability workshops, students at CLC are given ample opportunity to explore a range of industries and careers.
We really are made visible to all students from LC1 and above if they want to come and meet with us, or if they’re thinking about subjects to take at GCSE, A Level, or entry requirements for particular universities. The world is their oyster and it may seem overwhelming but we emphasise it’s exciting! – Miss McCarthy
In the PGC, staff make it their priority to get to know each student.
“I would say the most important thing is getting to know each student well enough to be able to provide the best help and guidance that we can…When you get to know the students really well you can offer much more well-rounded advice” – Miss Green
At CLC we see the full picture. We understand that the route to success is about more than just achieving high level exam results. We are proud to nurture an academic environment where students feel they can choose their own future and leave CLC feeling ready to achieve success in higher education and employment.
“School isn’t just about gaining grades, although obviously that’s important, it’s also about really being ready to go into the big wide world and think about getting a job.” – Dr Sherwood
