Ten SFC1 students took part in the recent Cheltenham Education Partnership (CEP) Changemakers Showcase, an event bringing together students from ten local schools to share sustainability projects they’ve been working on throughout the year.
CLC’s contribution is a proposal for a sensory wellbeing garden to be created on the main school campus. The students designed the garden themselves, linking ideas of sustainability with student mental health. The result is a space that promotes biodiversity and mindfulness, and which, once completed, will also be offered as a space for local community and charity groups to enjoy.
At the showcase, our students ran an engaging and beautifully presented display stall, featuring a model of the garden, information panels, and a hands-on activity which proved especially popular. Visitors were invited to write a personal message about sustainability on wooden labels, which will be displayed in the completed garden. Over 150 people visited our stall, including the Mayor of Cheltenham, who spent more than twenty minutes speaking to the students about their ideas.
The students were also successful in securing UK government funding for the project — an impressive achievement in itself. As the organisers noted: “£6000 of funding has been made available by Cheltenham Borough Council (CBC), through the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, to support schools with local climate action projects.”
The Changemakers Showcase was a brilliant celebration of young people’s commitment to environmental thinking. Climate change is understandably a topic that causes anxiety, and to see so many students implementing such varied projects was a real source of hope.
We look forward to seeing the garden come to life next term.
