Double Reed Woodwind Masterclass
23rd January 2025

On Wednesday 8th January, Joanna Baillie Stark (bassoon) came to College to work with some of our woodwind and French horn players. Joanna has a wealth of experience as an orchestra musician, performing as a guest in many of the UK’s leading orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

She is a keen chamber musician and has also recorded for CD, film, television and radio. Alongside her passion for performing, Joanna is a dedicated teacher and currently works at the Junior Royal Academy of Music and the Purcell School.

Audrey (oboe) and Mary (bassoon) performed solos in the Masterclass. Joanna imparted practice tips that were beneficial for the performers and audience alike. The wonderful individual performances were then followed by a wind nonet with Joanna directing from the first bassoon chair. Joanna encouraged the girls to further their ensemble skills and prepared the group to perform without a conductor.

After the class, she expressed how impressed she had been by the standard and how well our musicians adapted to her ideas. Well done to all involved!

Mrs Bungard, Head of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion
