On Friday 15th November, approximately 70 SFC1 A Level and IB economists attended the EBEA (Economics, Business and Enterprise Association) Conference held at the Bank of England, to hear several fascinating and thought-provoking talks about a range of economic issues.
The first talk, ‘How to see into the future’, delivered by well-respected economist and author Tim Harford, contrasted the fates of John Maynard Keynes and Irving Fisher, two of the 20th century’s greatest economists. Tim spoke with great enthusiasm about the latest research on what makes a good forecaster, and whether economists can learn to see into the future.
Following this, there was a ‘Discover Economics’ workshop, where students were given the opportunity to participate in an interactive survey, to share their views on a variety of current UK tax and spending issues.
The final talk was delivered by Dr Swati Dhingra, an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee of The Bank of England. She spoke with great insight on post-Brexit UK economic performance, as well as the impact of pollutive behaviour on the economy.
Alongside these talks, there were several Q&A sessions with a broad range of economists from a diverse range of careers and backgrounds, including Mark Gregory (former Chief Economist, Ernst & Young), Felicia Odamtten (founder of the The Black Economists Network), and Ashley Young (Economist from the Bank of England) to discuss how to make the best application to study an economics course at university, as well as guidance on how to pursue a career in economics.
The event was a great success, inspiring students and leaving them well-placed to develop their academic journeys into the fascinating world of economics.
