Economics Students Welcome Guest Speakers From Monuskin
3rd November 2025

Economics students recently welcomed skincare entrepreneurs Larry and Claire Van Bekkum, owners of local skincare company Monuskin, for an engaging Q&A session.

The visit provided an invaluable opportunity for students to connect economic theory with real-world business practice.

Larry and Claire began by introducing the origins of Monuskin. They highlighted the importance of setting clear, achievable goals from building a loyal customer base to maintaining high product quality, and how these objectives have evolved as the company has grown. Students were particularly interested in hearing how the couple balanced short-term targets with long-term ambitions, and how passion for their product continues to drive their decision-making.

The discussion then turned to growth strategies. Larry and Claire spoke candidly about the challenges of expanding a business in a competitive industry, outlining how they invested in research, marketing, and sustainable practices to differentiate themselves from larger competitors. They also touched on the importance of brand identity and customer trust in building a lasting business.

Perhaps most relevant to the Economics syllabus, they explored the wider macroeconomic factors influencing their business. Topics included the impact of inflation on production costs, exchange rate fluctuations affecting exports, and the opportunities and risks posed by global supply chains. Students were able to see how concepts studied in class – such as interest rates, consumer demand, and government policy – have tangible effects on decision-making in the business world.

The session ended with an open Q&A, where students asked thoughtful questions about entrepreneurship, leadership, and the realities of running a company. Both Larry and Claire praised the students for their curiosity and engagement. Overall, the visit was an inspiring and practical experience, leaving students with a deeper understanding of how economics shapes the world of business.
