On Tuesday 11th November, all of UC5 were off timetable for a morning of talks and activities to get them thinking about what lies beyond their GCSEs.
Students were treated to a comprehensive talk from a representative of the University of Bath who spoke about choosing subjects for A Level or IB and also how to make the most of the Sixth Form, all with a view to progressing to the next stage of their life journey, whether that is, for example, to university, onto an apprenticeship or straight into the world of work.
Following the university talk, students enjoyed an employability session where they were asked to consider which qualifications and skills certain jobs and careers may require, and to reflect on the skills they already have and what they can do to develop further.
A trip to see Hadley House, the new Sixth Form Centre, due to open in Autumn 2026, came next. Students enjoyed a look around what will be their base at College for SFC1 and SFC2. There was much excitement as they toured the rooms, considering which areas would be the study spaces and which might turn into the coffee shop! After this, they headed off to experience lunch in one of the Sixth Form boarding houses.
One of our pupils, Mary (UC5), shared her highlights from the day:
“The careers morning was interesting and overall very informative. The day started with a talk by a representative from Bath University, telling us about different courses and how we could make our A Levels or IB choices fit with the courses we wanted to take. I was particularly grateful for the advice on writing personal statements, as that is something I have struggled to do before.
“After the talk, we went to the PH, and our group was given a career to learn about, and to make an A-Level/ University plan for (we got a property surveyor). After break, we were given a sheet to write down our future plans, and how we think our current skills will help us achieve them.
“We then had lunch at the Sixth Form houses, in my case Beale, Cambray and Roderic, and then went on a little tour. Since I'm in Eversleigh, I also had a look at Bayshill and Ms Brandon talked to all the Day girls about what life was like in Sixth Form, and how Bayshill works.
“Overall, it was a fun day and gave us some very good information for the future!”
We hope the morning has helped students consider their next steps and fired up their enthusiasm for the coming years at CLC.
