Endangered Species Musical Workshop 2021
6th October 2021

As part of our Saturday morning programme, LC1 (Y7) pupils had a demonstration of the instruments of the orchestra in the woodwind and brass faculty on 2nd October. The event, named ‘Endangered Species’ mainly focussed on the instruments that fewer children are currently taking up – bassoon, oboe, trumpet, French horn, trombone and tuba. This year we also included the double bass from the string family.

Nationally, the shortage of these instruments is a problem and at College we are doing our bit to help promote them. Learning these instruments offers pupils tremendous performing opportunities as there are not the same number of students to compete for places in CLC's orchestras, jazz band or wind band. Playing with a group of like-minded, dedicated musicians is a lot of fun and has significant benefits for wellbeing and confidence. Additionally, learning a musical instrument helps teach pupils discipline, teamwork, leadership, creativity, patience and dedication.

Our visiting music teachers gave live demonstrations and short performances on their main instrument. Some of our Music Scholars also dropped in to perform and help promote their chosen instrument, which was a lovely addition this year. Usually, as part of this annual activity, the pupils have an opportunity to try out the instruments, but this year, as an alternative, we are offering short individual and small group trial lessons for any pupils that are particularly inspired to take up a new instrument.
