Endangered Species Workshop 2023
28th September 2023

As part of our Friday enrichment programme, all LC1s had a demonstration of the Instruments of the Orchestra in the Woodwind and Brass faculty. The event named ‘Endangered Species’ mainly focused on the instruments that not as many children are currently taking up - bassoon, oboe, trumpet, French horn, trombone and tuba.

Our visiting music teachers gave live demonstrations and short performances on their main instrument. Some of our advanced College musicians also dropped in to perform and help promote their chosen instrument. The LC1s had an opportunity to try out each of the instruments and chat to the older students about their experiences performing in College.

Learning these instruments offers pupils tremendous performing opportunities as there are not the same number of girls to compete for places in orchestras, jazz band or wind band. Playing with a group of like-minded, dedicated musicians is a lot of fun and has significant benefits for wellbeing and confidence. Additionally, learning a musical instrument helps teach students discipline, teamwork, leadership, creativity, patience and dedication.
